You don’t have to be a genius at geography to know that Portland, Maine is a long way from Hattiesburg, Miss.
In miles, about 1,500. But in just about every other way, they are worlds apart.
Portland sits right on the Atlantic coast of Maine.
Hattiesburg is in interior Mississippi, 70 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.
In Portland, you’re likely to have fresh lobster for dinner and hear a Down East accent.
In Hattiesburg, they have a different way of talking and you can count on getting grits with breakfast whether you ordered them or not.
So after living in Portland for the past 10 years, moving to Hattiesburg is going to take some getting used to for Erick Snell, the new marketing director for the Raycom-owned NBC-ABC affiliate there, WDAM.
Naturally, the first difference Snell noticed was the weather.
“It was 20 degrees and snowing when I left Portland,” says Snell. “Today, it’s 85 degrees and sunny in Hattiesburg.”
Snell says that even though Hattiesburg is much smaller in market size than Portland (167 vs. 80), WDAM’s facility is nearly as large as the one he left in Portland and his staff is much bigger.
Snell will lead eight people in both the promotions and production teams at WDAM.
