WAVY, the Media General-owned NBC affiliate in the Hampton Roads, Va., area, (comprising Portsmouth, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Newport News), is reminding drivers to steer clear of distracted drivers all month long because April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
The station is featuring on-air messages from its traffic reporter Jen Lewis, as well as tips and information through social media posts.
“Our mission is to help make the roadways safer,” Lewis says, “by increasing the awareness of risky driving habits and encouraging safe driving throughout Hampton Roads.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving causes more than 3,000 deaths and over 400,000 injuries in America every year.
