Nearly every TV station in America has a long and usually distinguished history of serving their respective communities.
That history includes advances in television technology, examples of local programming and events, and a long list of popular and beloved on-air personalities, to name just a few.
But often, unfortunately, that history gets overlooked or ignored, relegated to just old black and white photos hung in the station’s hallways.
I believe that while many TV station owners and management teams have come and gone, the station’s emotional connection to its community usually remains strong and constant over the years.
So whenever I see a station promo that taps into that tradition of service, it catches my eye like this spot did from WAVE, the Raycom NBC affiliate in Louisville, Ky.
Here’s what Kris Ellison-Baete, WAVE’s promotion manager, had to say about it. (Plus, I asked him about the use of a woman’s voice as announcer in the spot.)
I really loved that one. WAVE 3 News has such a tremendous and rich history in our community. We have been pushing content to viewers over the airwaves for more than 65 years. A lot of memories and historical moments have happened over our air, and we have been consistently serving our viewers longer than any other television station here.
We wanted to build a spot that gave a nod to that tradition and history.
A spot that could serve as visual anchor for our viewers, to remind them where they have always turned for local content.
Rob Thomas (WAVE’s creative services director) wisely understood that some spots warrant a specific tone. This spot is one of them.
Her name is Nat Roers, from Columbia, SC. She does a wonderful job, and is a pleasure to work with.
