Social issues like same sex marriage, free speech, drugs and civil rights often lead the newscasts at TV stations across the country.
Sometimes, these issues spark heated debate. People takes sides which often leads to protests, and clashes with authority.
Just like they did back in the early 1960s in San Francisco.
In a new hour-long documentary airing Saturday night at 9 p.m. on the Bay Area’s NBC O&O KNTV, Rebels & Revolutions traces the beginnings of many political and social movements that are still issues today.
Rebels & Revolutions is the second installment of the station’s year-long series, Bay Area Revelations.
“What happened here had repercussions across the country,” says Joe Inderhees, KNTV’s executive producer for Rebels & Revolutions.
Inderhees acknowledges that these issues are not necessarily popular topics for a local TV station to tackle. “The documentary does not take a political stand,” he says.
“The documentary opens people’s eye to the back story behind the headlines. It tells the story of the people who were there at the time and gives their perspective.”
The program is told primarily through personal interviews with individuals — politicians, educators, authors, office holders, activists and city officials — who played a major role in the area’s pivotal points in history.
Narrated by actor and Emmy-winning narrator Peter Coyote, Rebels & Revolutions, “sheds light on a significant time in the Bay Area’s history, weaving together stories that are not familiar to most,” says Rich Cerussi, KNTV’s general manager.
