The Amtrak disaster here in Philadelphia is reminding viewers of just how dangerous, and deadly, it can be when a train derails.
In Iowa, it’s not just train passengers at risk but residents who live along and near the train routes.
The area is seeing a huge increase in carloads of crude oil due to an oil boom in North Dakota.
In 2000, only 239 carloads of crude moved through the state. Two years ago, the number had jumped astronomically to almost 40,000 carloads.
During the May ratings period, KWWL, the Quincy Newspaper-owned NBC affiliate serving the northeastern third of Iowa, including Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque and Iowa City, reported on how prepared towns and cities should be for a train disaster involving crude oil.
