Soldiers returning from the Vietnam War didn’t get the enthusiastic welcome home we see veterans get coming back from Iraq or Afghanistan.
It’s wasn’t the soldiers fault. They were just serving their country.
Sadly, many still feel the pain of returning to a country that wasn’t ready to celebrate their service.
And in a week-long special series on KCPQ, Tribune’s Fox affiliate in Seattle, they open up to talk about their sacrifice, suffering and bravery.
The series of interviews will live as a permanent record in the Library of Congress.
The interviews were conducted by famed Vietnam War correspondent Joe Galloway.
Galloway was a front-line war correspondent for the United Press International. He was decorated with the Bronze Star with Valor for heroism on the battlefield.
His book, We Were Soldiers Once…and Young, inspired the movie, We Were Soldiers, released in 2002.
Here’s an emotional interview the station conducted with Galloway about his experience in Vietnam.
In addition to promos that aired KCPQ and Pandora, Laura Rieder, the station’s marketing manager, created some Facebook video posts excerpted from the interviews.
The posts reached 464,825 people and the videos were viewed a total of 164,858 times, according to Rieder.
