I would think winning one Edward R. Murrow Award for excellent writing would be a career accomplishment. But to win it three times is remarkable.
WMAR’s Brian Kuebler won a 2015 regional Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in writing, giving him a hat trick since he also won in 2013 and 2012. WMAR is Baltimore’s ABC affiliate owned by Scripps.
The writing award is given to a reporter whose words convey the feeling and significance of events to the viewer.
Kuebler’s inspiring story, Ping Pong Plaza, examined a social experiment involving a public ping pong table in Baltimore City, MD and how it is helping to bring people together.
“In the hard streetscape of Baltimore City,” Kuebler wrote, “it’s a little plastic ball getting random people to stop short in their routines, let their eyes trace a different rhythm… and smile.”
In 2013 Kuebler earned the same award for his piece The Journey Home, and in 2012 he won for Road to Recovery.
