KMGH, the ABC affiliate in Denver owned by Scripps, had a modest goal in mind when it teamed up with Goodwill to collect books for kids in need of summer reading.
Approximately 40,000 books were donated during the month of May, more than 2.5 times the original goal of 14,000.
“And to think it all started with just one teacher wanting to know what her students cared about,” says Brad Remington, KMGH’s general manager.
The teacher, Kyle Schwartz of Doull Elementary in Denver, asked students to finish the sentence “I Wish My Teacher Knew” and was shocked in learning that a majority of her students do not have the tools they need to succeed in school, including books.
Kyle’s story was featured on ABC’s World News Tonight with David Muir and immediately went viral around the world on social media.
Her plea inspired 7News Books for Kids.
“The truth is, I have some students who don’t have a single book to call their own,” says Schwartz. “When they finally get that book in their hands, when it’s theirs, they’ve picked it out, they’re excited about it. It’s just this inspiring sight, they just drop and start reading because it’s their own book.”
Adds Remington: “We are blown away by how the community reacted donating 40,000 books in just a month’s time. It’s just great to live in a community where people care this much.”
Here’s a news story about how a local 9-year old girl helped the project.
