It amazes me how cruel kids can be to each other.
I remember incidents from when I was a kid when one kid would “bully” another, humiliate them in front of a group.
Once, a kid shook up a warm can of soda and then opened it in the face of another. I stood by and did nothing.
We hear about kids as young as 10 or 12 who commit suicide because of being bullied.
For kids, their parents and teachers, it’s a serious problem. So any attempt to create awareness about the problem in the hopes that kids might change their behavior when it comes to being bullied or seeing someone else being bullied, that’s a step in the right direction.
WREX, the NBC affiliate in Rockford owned by Quincy Newspapers, recruited 15 students to sit in a room together.
Two of the kids were actors, and the cameras rolled as one actor began bullying the other.
What did the kids do about it? Parents, and a school psychologist were on hand to watch and then talk about the results.
Josh Morgan, WREX’s news director, says he got the idea from KWWL Cedar Rapids, Iowa, another station owned by Quincy.
(It’s the November ratings period and I’m sharing the promos and the stories they promote from stations around the country. If you’d like to share your station is covering this month, let me know.)
