Jacksonville, Fla., has the third largest military presence in the country behind Norfolk, Va., and San Diego. So to honor the military on Veterans Day, Tegna’s WJXX (ABC) and WTLZ (NBC) there went big.
How big?
Aircraft carrier big.
On Veterans Day, they aired Good Morning, Jacksonville, their morning news program, live from the deck of the USS Iwo Jima, an active duty aircraft carrier.
All-week big.
The stations dedicated the entire week to stories and coverage about the military, calling it Military Week.
All social media big.
The stations updated and teased their coverage with Facebook videos, provided event coverage via Twitter with hashtag #MilitaryWeek and posted pictures on Instagram.
WJXX-WTLZ produced and distributed content to all their digital platforms.
$177,000 big.
The stations hosted all-day donation drives, and raised more than $177,000 for K-9s for Warriors which provides service canines to those suffering from PTSD or traumatic brain injury.
“Our goal is to empower them to return to civilian life with dignity and independence,” said Barabara Beresford, WJXX-WTLZ’s marketing director.
