KRON San Francisco debuted its latest storytelling tool yesterday, a drone approved by the FAA, showing viewers the destruction caused by The Valley Fire, which caused more than $1.5 billion in losses.
KRON, Media General’s San Francisco MNT affil, has named the drone QuadCopter4.
“Using the new QuadCopter4, viewers get to see just how massive the destruction was,” said Aaron Pero, KRON’s news director. “This can take you places the reporter’s camera cannot.”
QuadCopter4 is flown by Mark Burnette, who in addition to being a newscast director at the station, is also a licensed pilot. Burnett attended a special training session in Colorado and is ensuring all Federal Aviation Administration standards and guidelines are met.
“We’re looking forward to using this valuable resource to truly enhance the viewer experience,” said Ashley Gold Messina, KRON’s general manager.
Here’s the fire story that aired today using footage shot by the drone.
NOTE: The solid, smooth aerial footage that drones provide can add perspective to almost any story. I haven’t seen any drone footage yet that was anything less than mesmerizing.
Here are a few drone videos that can take your breath away.
