No address. No identity. No place to go.
“Homeless” doesn’t really convey the reality of the situation.
Especially when you’re a teenager living on the streets of Philadelphia.
Who are they? Why are they homeless? Why are they forgotten?
WCAU, the NBC O&O in Philadelphia, aired a half-hour special report, The Faces of Homeless Youth, this week to show the humanity behind the statistics.
In order to tell their story, WCAU digital reporters Vince Lattanzio and Morgan Zalot spent several months on the streets talking to homeless teens, embedding themselves in the city’s only crisis shelter that exclusively serves young adults.
Lattanzio and Zalot interviewed more than 20 young people who are or were homeless.
The project would not have been possible without the young people who generously gave of their time and courageously entrusted WCAU with their stories.
The series of news reports and the half-hour special has resulted in proposed legislation to get more funding for homeless youth.
