For 27 years, WRAL, Capitol Broadcasting’s CBS affiliate in Raleigh-Durham, N.C., has partnered with the Salvation Army for the annual Coats for the Children campaign, providing winter clothing, money and new toys for families in need.
During that time, more than 155,000 coats and over $1 million were collected and distributed to families.
And today, WRAL will conduct an all-day telethon raising money to buy new, warm winter clothing and new toys for children in need.
“The Coats for the Children campaign is essential for these children,” said Major Pete Costas, commanding officer of The Salvation Army of Wake County.
“A coat provides more than just warmth. A coat can provide a child hope in their time of need.”
“We know there’s a growing need. We also know we live in a very generous community,” said Steven Hammel, WRAL’s general manager.
“When we ask our viewers for help they come through, and we are grateful for that.”
WRAL has community partners, Jiffy Lube and First Citizens Bank, that provide support for the project.
“We’re using #WRALCoats on social media and have designed special social share graphics,” said Shelly Leslie, WRAL’s creative services director.
“We’ve also turned over our station Facebook cover photo to the effort. You can see other posts about the campaign if you just scroll our page.”
