Television stations are getting results for local businesses by being innovative and creative and by utilizing whatever station assets are needed—on-air, digital, social media, mobile, whatever.
And TVNewsCheck’s Market Share has profiled some of these successful sales campaigns:
In Traverse City, Mich., a station created a passport for discounts at local wineries and breweries.
In Raleigh, N.C., it was a grocery store contest.
In Baton Rouge, La., a yard make-over.
In Paducah, Ky., it was a Facebook contest.
And in Grand Rapids, Mich., a Mother’s Day contest provided recognition for a regional restaurant chain and non-traditional revenue for the station.
WXMI, Tribune Media’s Fox affiliate in Grand Rapids, has been holding the Fox17 Maid for Moms Giveaway for the last several years.
The grand prize winner wins weekly maid service for a year.
Noodles & Company, a restaurant chain with locations all over the United States including 18 in Michigan and five in WXMI’s coverage area, was looking for opportunities to create awareness about their restaurants and especially wanted a way to highlight a new menu item.
WXMI created on-air commercials that directed viewers to go to the Maid for Mom contest page on the station’s website, www.fox17online.com, to register to win.
The contest ran for three weeks leading up to Mother’s Day. The grand prize winner was announced during WXMI’s morning news.
WXMI hired Second Street Promotions Lab, (http://secondstreetlab.com), an online promotions
company serving the media industry, to facilitate the online drawing.
Viewer participation for Fox17’s Maid for Moms Giveaway grows every year.
According to Joe Teague, WXMI’s account executive, registration for Maid for Moms doubled from 1000 in 2013 to 2400 in 2014.
But what Teague says is really exciting about the promotion is that it allows smaller shops to get on TV, which leads to “future opportunities about more opportunities.”
“This is our second year doing the Maid for Moms Giveaway,” says Mike Endres, Noodles & Company’s marketing director. “It provides an opportunity for us to make a TV appearance. We get a lot of recognition from our appearance on TV. We’ve used that opportunity to introduce new dishes which helps get the word out quite a bit.
