Granted, it’s only the first day.
But if WRAL’s performance on Day One as an NBC affiliate in Raleigh, N.C., is any indication of what’s to come, NBC’s probably thinking it should have done this years ago.
“This was a great first day. I don’t see how it could have been any better,” said Steven D. Hammel, WRAL’s general manager.
After 30 years as a CBS affiliate, Capitol Broadcasting’s WRAL began its move to its new network by breaking a few records for some NBC programs in the 25th market.
According to WRAL, based on overnight Nielsen household ratings, NBC’s morning news program, The Today Show, scored its highest ratings ever in Raleigh.
And the same held true at the other end of the day; NBC’s Nightly News with Lester Holt enjoyed its highest ratings ever in the market.
“We saw the amazing power of a WRAL news lead-in to network programming,” said Shelly Leslie, WRAL’s creative director.
According to the station, WRAL’s dominant, local morning news block drove NBC’s The Today Show ratings up 265% making it No. 1 in the time period, as compared to Nielsen household ratings from the same week in 2015.
WRAL says “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt was up more than 200%, driven by WRAL’s No. 1 rated 6 p.m. newscast.”

“We are delighted with the day one numbers and realize we have more to do to become an even better television station,” said Hammel.
WRAL’s top-rated late news helped push NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon ratings up 60%, making it No. 1 in its time period.
“Personally, I’ve never been more proud to work for a locally-owned company,” said Leslie.
“We share the same values with NBC, the same commitment to leadership and innovation. I think we’re going to be great together.”
NOTE: Market Share has reached out to WNCN, the new CBS affiliate in Raleigh, to ask about its marketing efforts in regard to the affiliation switch and we hope to report that in the future.
