When there’s a change in local TV news ratings in a market, that’s news.

I get press releases from many stations touting their sweeps performance overall or in a particular time period. What I ask those stations to do is to try to put that performance into some kind of context, a kind of elevator pitch if you will.
Why did your station do well, do you think? Please provide any relevant marketing and examples of actual news coverage. This way, we can perhaps gain a perspective.
WBTV is the CBS affiliate in Charlotte, N.C., owned by Raycom. It’s been 25 years since WBTV could claim the ratings crown in Charlotte, so obviously, I wanted to know how and why it won last month.
“No gimmicks,” wrote Robby Thomas, WBTV’s creative services director. “The growth has come from our commitment to On Your Side journalism, service to our viewing community and aggressive promotion.”
Here are some promos and associated news stories that Thomas points to as examples of the station’s On Your Side journalism that helped WBTV earn the 6 p.m. newscast crown.

Thomas says the momentum really began showing up first in the morning.
“One of my producers, Joseph Dunn, does a great job each day with that show’s topical using a 50% image-creative approach that features the talent and consistently incorporates brand language to reinforce key research points. The entire on-air team is helpful and prepared to shoot each morning right after they come off the air around 9 a.m. The finished product starts showing up in our noon news and airs throughout the remainder of the day.”
Have you got a morning news strategy that you want to share? Let me know.
