These are the kinds of spots you’d expect from a network-owned TV station in the country’s largest market. Terrific concepts and high production value.
Everybody has seen the local TV format for the five-day forecast or the seven-day planner, or whatever your station calls it.
The weather forecast is displayed day by day with high and low temperatures along with icons, sometimes animated, representing sunshine, clouds, rain or snow.
But what was lacking was the connection to how people use the forecast to dress or plan outdoor activities.
In this new weather spot from WABC, ABC’s New York O&O, the station visually marries the forecast with video of people outside doing what they would do according to the forecast.
A great idea, well-executed.
I wonder if WABC can carry this idea into its on-air forecasts?

What kind of images come to mind when you picture a busy afternoon at 5 o’clock on the streets of New York? The hustle and bustle of people leaving work while they check their devices?
This 5 o’clock news promo from WABC has some really nice camerawork that captures the frenetic feeling of a busy day in a big city.
In almost every shot, the subject is in clear focus while whatever else is in the picture is soft.
Whether it’s the anchors walking in a busy newsroom, the reporters out working a story in the field or even viewers finding their way home, you just can’t take your eyes off the people in focus.
