WDIV, the NBC affiliate in Detroit owned by Graham Media, helped raise more than $1 million dollars yesterday in a day-long telethon for the Flint Child Health and Development Fund, a nonprofit that helps Flint’s childrens’ education, nutrition and medical intervention.
“This was truly a labor of love,” said Marla Drutz, WDIV’s general manager.
“And we really feel that we’re more than just a TV station. With so many children affected, we felt we had to get involved. It was amazing to see the television stations, businesses and individuals come together to raise so much money for the families of Flint.”
The Flint Water Crisis: 4 Our Families telethon ran all day, starting at 6 in the morning until 8 last night, from WDIV’s studio and at the Art Van Furniture store in Flint. More than 1,500 people called in to make donations.
Upon announcement of the telethon, Flint native and Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores and his FlintNOW organization agreed to match all donations up to $! million.
Art Van Furniture, a multi-state furniture company based in Michigan, donated $100,000, and hosted a phone bank at its Flint store and provided employees to answer phones.
Other large donations came from Kroger, Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, Meijer and Alec Gores, Tom Gores’ brother.
WDIV and its parent company, Graham Media Group, also contributed $20,000 to the families of Flint.
