Just as I believe that there is something interesting going on in news, marketing and sales in our local TV stations every day, as someone with a degree in education, I can guarantee you that something interesting goes on in every school, in every community, every day.
So it’s refreshing to see a local TV station get involved with the schools in their market in a meaningful way.
WPIX, Tribune’s CW affiliate in New York City, PIX11 established the Fuel My School project for New York City public schools.
Students, teachers and parents from elementary, middle and high schools in the 5 boroughs of New York City were invited to submit an essay explaining how their school makes a difference.
WPIX received nearly 600 school submissions.
Earlier this week, WPIX announced Brooklyn Gardens Elementary as the winning elementary school and presented Principal Irene Spence a $5,000 check to be used on school supplies or technology – the items the school cannot afford and feel would make a difference in the lives of their students.
“Staff members extend themselves daily buying basic school supplies, backpacks, books, even clothing,” wrote second grade teacher Francheska Cepeda in her submission.
“We inspire children to cultivate a love for learning, spark their curiosity to discover their world, motivate them to achieve success, and have fun! We teach our students healthy living choices, sustainable food, consumption of waste, and energy.”
WPIX will announce the Fuel My School middle school winner in their morning news on March 24, and the winning high school on April 1.
