David Stojcevski died in a Michigan jail after being arrested for a traffic ticket.
WDIV, Detroit’s NBC affiliate owned by Graham Media, broke the story and the FBI is now looking into the case.
Stojcevski spent 16 days in jail, suffering from serious drug withdrawal and losing more than 50 pounds, before dying on the floor of his cell.
WDIV’s investigators poured through more than 240 hours of video in its coverage of the story, It’s A Hard Thing To Watch A Man Die.
WDIV won a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Continuing Coverage in the large television market category for Region 7 which comprises Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
WDIV will now compete with other regional award winners from across the country for a national award. National award winners will be announced by RTDNA in June.
“We are honored that our news team continues to make a difference, and effect positive change in our community,” said Marla Drutz, WDIV’s general manager.
