WTAE, Hearst’s ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh, won six regional Edward R. Murrow Awards in the large market television category for Region 11 that comprises New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
In addition to winning the award for Overall Excellence, WTAE was also recognized for Investigative Reporting for its investigation into how some teachers convicted of violent crimes, including sexual assault and murder, receive taxpayer-funded pensions.
WTAE series, Burning Questions, was honored with Murrows in the News Documentary and News Series categories. Burning Questions also won a George Foster Peabody Award from the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism.
Burning Questions tells the story of systemic problems within Pennsylvania’s volunteer fire departments leading to wide gaps in fire response times. In the wake of the investigation, state legislators passed bills aimed at improving response times.
WTAE’s story of how a group of volunteers came to the rescue of a 91-year old World War II veteran won two Murrows, one for Best Use of Video and one for Writing.
Regional winners are automatically entered and advanced to the national Edward R. Murrow Awards competition, which will be judged in June.
