What can station attendees at this year’s PromaxBDA Station Summit in Las Vegas expect on the one day of the conference totally dedicated to them, Thursday, June 23?
Last week, we sat down with Rick Swanson, VP of marketing and programming at PromaxBDA, whose job it is to organize the activities on this special day. (The full conference runs June 21-24.)
While Swanson was not at liberty to reveal all the specifics then, and there are still a few details up in the air, he did establish that the sessions would be divided into three different tracks, Digital Innovation, Craft and Leadership.

Thursday, June 23
Official Conference Welcome, 8 a.m.
Speakers: Scot Chastain and Steve Kazanjian, PromaxBDA
Scot Chastain, chair, PromaxBDA and Steve Kazanjian, PromaxBDA’s president and CEO are up front and center stage for 15 minutes to welcome the attendees and set the tone for the day.
PromaxBDA Day Keynote Session, 8:15 a.m.
The speaker for this session has yet to be determined.
The Multi-Platform Brand, Digital Innovation, 9:15
Speaker: Jim Thomas, VP, Marketing, Frank N. Magid Associates
In 2015’s Station Summit, Thomas and Dick Haynes from Magid did a presentation titled, Marketing to the Home Team: Local TV Viewers Speak Out, which Market Share covered. That session presented the results of a nationwide study which tested promos from around the country.
Those findings revealed what needed to be in the messages to be effective, do promos in primetime TV drive viewership, and which medium is most effective—television, online, mobile, Facebook, or Twitter?
In this year’s session, The Multi-Platform Brand, Thomas reveals the result of another Magid study about marketing opportunities for local news promotion in the social media world.
The Secrets of Making Promos That Work, Craft, 9:15
Speakers: Graeme Newell and Greg Derkowski, 602 Communications
That’s right, this session is scheduled at the same time as The Multi-Platform Brand. What to do? Even if you can’t find a way to be in two places at once, all of the sessions will be available online to PromaxBDA members after the conference.
In this year’s session, The Secrets of Making Promos That Work, reveals the simple formulas of the best promo makers to build a compulsion to watch. Expect to see lots of examples.
In 2014’s Station Summit, 602 Communications’ Graeme Newell and Greg Derkowski demonstrated how making viewers “feel it deeply” is what the next generation of news marketing is all about.

In 2015, Newell and Derkowski showed us the science to making effective advertising. They showed dozens of local TV news promos that demonstrated winning practices and resonated with viewers.
