OK, it’s not just any random woman.
It’s Karen Rogers, traffic reporter and meteorologist for WPVI, the ABC O&O in Philadelphia.
It’s been a rainy and cool May in Philly so Rogers decided to go out and just give away some Action News umbrellas and recorded it all for Facebook.
Seems like a good idea, right? Who doesn’t want a free umbrella, mug, hat or T-shirt with a TV station’s logo on it? And then to have it be given to you by an on-air personality from the station?
So you edit it together and put it on the station’s Facebook page, the perfect place for it, and see what happens. The WPVI Action News Facebook page has more than 770,000 followers, and so a whopping 330,000 of them watched the two-minute piece.
Who wouldn’t want 300,000 viewers watching your meteorologist out in the rain giving away umbrellas?
I don’t know what metrics you need or what the threshold is for a video to go viral or to be an internet sensation, but 330,000 is a big number.
There were quite a few comments most of which were very much like these:
I would love a channel 6 Action News umbrella.
I would feel special just remembering that someone cares about me; especially on a rainy day.
Sometimes kindness is all it takes to put a smile on someone’s face
Karen Rogers rules, that’s one of the reasons I ❤ Action News. Their staff is real and approachable!
Lots of stations have tchotchkes — hats, t-shirts, pens, key rings, mugs, umbrellas, etc. — usually emblazoned with the station’s logo. They sit in a storage room at the station, with the door locked and guarded 24/7 by vicious attack dogs. Usually, only the creative services director has the key.
The goodies are used as prizes at events, or as giveaways for special clients.
And I’ve seen stations where these tchotchkes sit year after year, many with old, outdated logos, piled up waiting to see the light of day.
Guess what, they’re not doing anybody any good sitting in a box in a dark room deep within the bowels of the station.
If you have an annual budget for tchotchkes, the ideal situation is for you to have given away all of them the day a fresh order arrives at the station.
