6 a.m., Wednesday, June 22, Las Vegas
My direct flight from Philly to Las Vegas that I booked weeks ago to attend the 2016 PromaxBDA Station Summit this week was canceled the night before my departure. My only option was a connecting flight through L.A.
I won’t bore you with the gory details but suffice it to say I left my house at 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning and arrived in my hotel room in Las Vegas at 7 p.m. PT or 10 ET.
No other business operates the way the airlines do. And none of this was weather-related.
In one case, we were all on the plane, but the attendant informed us there were no pilots. Some had to be called from home to fly us to Vegas. Even the pilot said he was embarrassed when he boarded.
We’re all at The Mirage, a huge casino/resort with all the amenities so you never have to leave the hotel. Except there’s no coffee in the room. Every hotel room I’ve ever been in has a coffee pot for guests to brew coffee in the morning. Not here in Vegas. Morning coffee is a revenue opportunity and the smallest amount I could get from room service was a box containing enough for 6 cups at a cost of $15, plus tax, plus resort fee, plus tip, cream extra.
Of course, I can expense it, right Harry?
The temperatures are above 110 degrees.
Last year, it was just as hot. I had to walk to the drugstore to get some reading glasses, and along the way, I was approached on the sidewalk several times to buy cold water. One vendor even stopped mid-toke on his bong to ask. True story.
This morning’s first event is a talk at 8 by Harry Connick Jr. who has a new afternoon talk show planned for the fall.
I’m sure this is the earliest that Connick has ever had to do his act.
