You never see them, but they are always there.
Without them, there would be no local TV news to see, in most cases.
They operate, literally, behind the camera, using just one eye.
Local TV news photographers, videographers, if you will, are the foundation of local TV newsrooms.
While the anchors and reporters are by necessity well-dressed, polished, with great hair and bright smiles, their cameramen and women are more working class–blue jeans, sneakers, baseball cap, sometimes unshaven or bearded (the men that is). It can be a dirty job.
They usually always drive, and know exactly what to do when they hit the scene of whatever news it is they are sent to cover.
If you want to know anything about what’s really going in the newsroom, ask a news photog.
Like Dan Sheridan, a news photog at WPVI, the ABC-owned affiliate in Philadelphia, for 19 years.
(Here’s a short video of Sheridan packing up the news van)

Sheridan is always shooting something, and loves to play with his Go-Pros.
So when he got a gimbal, a hand-held stabilizer, like a steady cam, for his Go Pros, he went around the WPVI newsroom to shoot behind the scenes.
“I wanted to show people working,” said Sheridan.
So for 5 months, Sheridan captured the true grit, the cramped in the news van with paper bag lunches and coffee cups reality of local news.
“I asked people if they minded if I got a shot of them working,” said Sheridan.
Sheridan said it took him an hour and half to edit the piece.
“This is what we do,” said Sheridan.
