When long-time employees leave a place of business, it’s bittersweet, especially after 40-plus years. While the feeling of permanence their presence brought to the work place will be missed, the lessons they pass on to their friends and co-workers will continue for years to come.
What a feeling of accomplishment it must be to have worked at the same place for most of your life.
Jack Rinehart and Danny Wills are retiring after a combined 84 years working at WRTV, Scripps’ ABC affiliate in Indianapolis, having spent their lives working on either side of the camera, Rinehart as reporter and Wills as photographer.
Rinehart has broken thousands of stories, covered hundreds of exclusives and established himself as one of the most trusted reporters in the market, according to WRTV.
His career highlights include an Emmy Award, Associated Press Awards, a CASPER Award, and the state’s most prestigious award, the Sagamore of the Wabash, an honorary award given to him by former Indiana Governor Robert Orr.
Always the journalist, Rinehart has faithfully written down the details of every story he’s covered, creating a pile of reporter notebooks, and memories. Sounds like it all would make a great book.
In retirement, Rinehart intends to do some biking, read World War II era military history books, watch high school sports and bake gourmet pies.
Danny Wills enlisted in the Air Force after high school, where he worked in the photo lab.
When he returned to Indianapolis, he started working at WRTV, preparing daily news film and commercial slides, which included manually creating lower-third supers.
Over the years, Wills saw the television business transition from film, to ¾-inch tape, then to Beta, P2 cards and on to digital.
Among the thousands of stories Danny has covered, he says one of his greatest memories is seeing the opening ceremonies of the Pan Am Games.
Congrats to both for their dedicated service to their city and station and our business. Well done.
