Using the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio as a platform, WJAR, Sinclair’s NBC affiliate in Providence, R.I., is attempting to break some world records of its own — for the longest non-stop volleyball game and for the most volleyball consecutive passes over the net.
The WJAR, NBC 10 Volley for Buddies, is a beach volleyball tournament which started during the opening ceremonies last Friday night and is continuing all the way to closing ceremonies.
Players will be on the courts from 6 a.m. to just past midnight. They’re raising money for Best Buddies of Rhode Island. Best Buddies is the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
During WJAR’s newscasts, Right from Rio Update Desk, located just feet from the players, will provide live updates. Phone banks will help raise funds to hit the station’s $30,000 target, according to the station.
WJAR will also be holding phone banks to help raise more funds to hit that $30,000 target.
As to the world records, WJAR unofficially broke the most consecutive volleyball passes over the net already with an amazing 4,872 passes. The old record was a mere 110.
The station expects to break the record for longest non-stop volleyball game sometime next week. That record is 90 hours.
