A low pressure system sitting over southern Louisiana this past weekend caused widespread flooding so bad that churches throughout the Acadiana area surrounding Lafayette canceled Sunday services.
The governor estimates more than 20,000 people have been rescued. Offices and schools are closed today.
Knowing how important faith and spirituality are to the many predominately Catholic families in southern Louisiana, KLFY, Media General’s Lafayette’s CBS affiliate, called the bishop with an idea.
“We told the bishop that we would broadcast a mass from any church and pay for the expenses,” said Kenny Lawrence, KLFY’s general manager.
Lawrence said the idea surfaced while talking to Kyle Brinkman, his news director, about a crawl the station was running announcing all the canceled services.
Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel of Lafayette said he would come to the KLFY studios and celebrate Mass there.
The station aired the Mass live on Sunday morning at 9:30. In addition, the Mass was available for viewing via livestream on www.KLFY.com and the KLFY mobile app.
