Some lucky Tampa residents got part of $1 million in unclaimed money and property last Thursday by calling into a special phone bank at WFLA, the NBC affiliate owned by Media General.
Hosted by WFLA’s Shannon Behnken, an investigative consumer reporter, the phone bank helped residents reclaim more than 4,000 accounts totaling over $1,051,000 in just 24 hours.
Florida keeps track of unclaimed money and property from dormant accounts in financial institutions, insurance and utility companies, securities and trust holdings. The property can include items such as watches, jewelry, coins, stamps and cash.
“The volume of calls we received was unbelievable,” said Andy Alford, WFLA’s general manager, “proving once again that News Channel 8 is truly On Your Side.”
Getting people reunited with a million dollars in 24 hours suggests that when you’ve got a consumer problem, you Better Call Behnken.
