Employees come, and employees go. It’s fact of life in any business, but especially true in local TV news. It’s part of the culture and for many, the allure. You often start in a small market TV station, get some experience and move on to a bigger market, and so forth.
Most of the time, it’s amicable. Like recently at KNOE, Gray’s CBS affiliate in Monroe,La. I came across this post by Bob Walters, KNOE’s news director and a friend of mine from my days at Nexstar and thought it would make a nice story. Walters didn’t think so only because he didn’t want any attention drawn to himself. After I convinced him otherwise, here it is.
Aaron Cantrell is leaving KNOE for another market. But he wanted to make sure he expressed his gratitude for Walters for hiring him and penned him, in cursive, this note.
“He has worked hard and grown tremendously in the past year,” said Walters.
He worked through the very last day with the same drive and commitment he started with, as it should be. Most days news directors deal with more complaints than anything else, from inside and outside the newsroom. So getting something like this helps put things in perspective.”
Word has it that Cantrell is making a nice jump to an Alabama market.
By the way, you might recognize Cantrell from another Market Share story. He was one of the three KNOE reporters who fell overboard while reporting on some flooding in Monroe.
Stay dry, and classy, Mr. Cantrell.
