One my first day as creative services director at a TV station, the general manager came into my office and closed the door.
He said, “I have good news and bad news. The bad news is your promotion manager just resigned to work across the street, and she’s taking one of your writer/producers with her. The art director also resigned and so did another writer/producer.”
“And the good news?” I asked.
“You get to hire your own staff,” said the GM with a wink.
True story.
On Candace Shoates’ first official day as the new digital special projects producer of the WVEC marketing team, she got a cake.

Mowers is the marketing director at WVEC, Tegna’s ABC affiliate in Norfolk, Va.
