Most TV stations get involved in helping the people in their communities, regardless of the time of year.
But this time of year, they seem to take it up a notch.
And this year, WPTV saw a way to combine the power of its broadcasts with the popularity of its on-air personalities on Facebook to collect a record amount of food for its annual Bill Brooks Food for Families food drive.
WPTV is the NBC affiliate in West Palm Beach owned by Scripps.
To promote the food drive, WPTV aired some touching and creative promos.
In addition, the station then turned to a challenge on Facebook between the morning and night-side news teams to add a fun, competitive element that not only led to increased engagement on Facebook, but a record amount of food collected.
“You’ll see from the links that this challenge led to a whole lot of fun on social media,” said Christine Baron, WPTV’s creative services director.
“Both teams created some entertaining videos promoting the friendly rivalry. These social posts created interest and engagement with audiences. This friendly competition also brought new energy and excitement to the entire staff at WPTV.”
The station was able to collect more than 26,000 pounds of food in this just one-day challenge, a record amount for the station.
