Inexplicably, it used to be that the demand for TV station sales inventory would drop dramatically a week or so prior to Christmas Day and continue for several weeks.
It defied logic, but the end result was that stations would suddenly have lots of open inventory on the log for the marketing department to fill with promos and PSAs.
Often, whole two-minute breaks would be vacant.
Maybe times have changed, but in those days, it was prudent to plan for that and have some “Happy Holiday” promos from the station ready to air, even 60-second versions.
