An Indianapolis mother and her seven children escaped with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
“He got that gun, he already had it out and he shot. The bullet went so close near me, it shot out my back car window,” said Tamika Peterson.
Where do a mom and seven kids with just the clothes on their backs go?
“We slept in a car, we slept anywhere and when I say anywhere, I do mean anywhere,” described Peterson.
A chance meeting with a police officer from the Indianapolis police department changed all that after she contacted Media General’s CW affiliate WISH about the family.
The station joined with some local businesses to help the family and launch a new franchise, WISH Patrol. WISH and its partners were able to give the Petersons food, gifts for the kids, clothes and furniture.
“This is such a heartwarming story to be able to share,” said Joe Abouzeid, WISH general manager. “We’d like to thank our corporate and community partners, especially Godby Home Furnishings, Kroger, and Goodwill. Without their generosity, this would not have been possible.”
