Arizona TV viewers and radio listeners who turn on their favorite local stations tomorrow night at 6:30 may think they’ve stepped into an episode of The Twilight Zone.
Because no matter which channel they select on the dial, the programming will be the same.
It has happened once before, two years ago. But it’s an extremely rare event.
Normally, local TV and radio stations are fiercely competitive. For every station in one state to agree to air the same program at the same time, it must be extremely important.
Hooked Rx: From Prescription to Addiction, a half-hour commercial-free investigative report produced by students from Arizona State University, will air on 30 broadcast TV stations in Phoenix, Tucson and Yuma and 97 of the state’s radio stations in English and Spanish. The air time will be at 6:30 p.m. on most stations.
Cronkite News, the student-produced news division of Arizona PBS, is producing the documentary in conjunction with the Arizona Broadcasters Association.
Hooked Rx builds upon the first documentary, Hooked: Tracking Heroin’s Hold on Arizona, which aired two years ago, won numerous honors, including a national Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, and was seen by more than a million people.

Here’s a promo for that special.
Hooked Rx uncovers the root of the heroin epidemic with in-depth interviews with recovering prescription pill addicts, law enforcement, government officials and doctors and public health experts.
“We’re still getting calls and emails about the first ‘Hooked,’” said Art Brooks, Arizona Broadcasting Association’s president.
“They say it saved their son or daughter. It’s great to see that it’s still making an impact. We encourage Arizonans to once again tune in to watch Hooked Rx.”
