Last Friday’s shooting at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is a case in point.
WPTV, the NBC affiliate in West Palm owned by E. W. Scripps, did multiple Facebook Live posts to provide continuing coverage of the shooting, according to Eric Weiss, WPTV’s digital director.
“On the main WPTV page, we did multiple Facebook Lives of our continuing coverage. Our overall reach for the day was 5.9 million people on Facebook.”
Michael Williams, WPTV’s main anchor, provided seven Facebook Live posts from the scene, according to Weiss.
“When your talent is at the active scene, feeling the emotion of surviving victims, just can’t recreate the stories the talent share live on social,” said Christine Baron, WPTV’s creative services director.
“For the people watching another fatal shooting unfold, we are here to help comfort them with facts, not inflated commentary.”
