Joe “Willie” Namath, legendary NFL Hall of Fame quarterback and actor, and renowned man-about-town, reveals that he suffered brain damage from playing football, but that special treatments in a Florida hospital have improved the damage.
“I feel good about it and I haven’t stopped trying to improve,” said Namath, 73, in an interview aired on WFLX, the Fox affiliate in West Plam Beach, Fla., owned by Raycom but operated by E.W. Scripps through a shared services agreement with Scripps-owned NBC affiliate WPTV.
Namath once appeared in an ad wearing women’s panty hose, where it was referenced that his legs were insured for $1 million.
“You start questioning your memory, “ said Namath.
The legendary quarterback found himself at Jupiter Medical Center where a brain scan revealed damage, so he began a clinical trial.
He then had 120 treatments inside a hyperbaric chamber, receiving oxygen that made a lasting impression.
The Neurological Research Center now bears his name and 100 patients, from war veterans to race car drivers who have suffered traumatic brain injury, are undergoing therapy.
“I plan on being around for a while, so I need to feel productive. I need to feel like I’m taking care of this instrument on a daily basis, and I know I’m the only one who can do that,” said Namath.
