When I shared the KXTV Morning News Blend promo last week, I promised to have an update on its production. And I will. (KXTV is Tegna’s ABC in Sacramento, Calif.)
But first, I wondered what some in the industry might be saying about the promo.
Here are a couple of comments about it on Don Smith’s blog, IDoPromoz.
The problem with spots like this is that they don’t feel even remotely like the product.
You actually feel like you’re being sold BS instead of heightened reality.
It’s attention-getting and different, but the key point of familiarity in it is only recognizable to a demographic that likely doesn’t watch or even respect local news.
To which someone responded:
Wow. Tough crowd. You want to get attention? Mission accomplished.
Energetic? Check. Makes me like the talent? Sure.
Makes me curious about the morning show? Absolutely.
Incredible JIB shot too.
Then I checked KXTV’s Facebook page to see what its followers are saying.
There were almost 90 comments. I checked most of them, and nearly everyone liked it.
These are KXTV followers, many probably Morning News Blend watchers.
In fairness, here are a couple of the negative comments.
Cahrels said: Hey everyone look at The new Journalists…Look how they dance… No news investigation but they can dance..Very Sad ABC News…Is everything a joke and dance no news..
Danny wrote: So sad, though I understand why folks do this, that we, in this ‘dire’ time spend so much time and energy on this pap!
But most nearly all of the comments were variations on this theme:
Curtis wrote: OK you guys, that was really funny. New talents discovered in song and dance!
Erik wrote: I have to say this cracks me up in a good way! You all have many talents!
Pedro wrote: I like that, as matter a fact it was very damn great!
Cynthia wrote: And the Oscar goes to….THE MORNING BLEND!

As mentioned in the original column about this promo, the anchors did the singing and dancing.
Mark Allen is KXTV’s feature and entertainment reporter and one of the anchors in the promo.
He said that the team had 12 run-throughs in rehearsals and another dozen practice runs on the day of the shoot, until they were “moving as a single-cell organism.”
As to the singing, he said everybody recorded their part separately, not knowing what the other anchor’s voices sounded like.
“The first time we heard the song as a whole was when we rolled,” said Allen.
The production required surgical precision, said Allen, to record the entire promo in one continuous take.
“This crew behind the scenes took as much choreography to make it come together. I’ve been on the set of some of the most elaborate, highest grossing movies of the last 20 years. And I’ve never seen a local TV crew work on the same level until this shoot,” said Allen.
“Having worked with them before, I knew it would likely be something spectacular.”
According to Drew Fowler, KXTV’s marketing director, the crew was: Jason Miller, Director, David Montgomery, Rose Mendonca, Sam Platz, Theresa Mier, Hugh Gaskill, Tori Anadon, Jason Knight, Steve Parmley and Ilana Blasingame.
And the talent in the wide-shot from left to right are: Dina Kupfer (social anchor), Megan Telles (anchor), Kennelia Stradwick (traffic), Rob Carlmark (weather), Mark S Allen (feature/entertainment) and Walt Gray (news).
