Some new weather promos from WUSA show Chief Meteorologist Topper Shutt driving the station’s storm tracker down the street late at night ruminating about the weather.

The spots are moody, cinematic, the dashlights dance as the streetlights pass outside the window.
Sometimes we hear what Topper is thinking; sometimes we hear what he’s saying.
I love the look of these spots. I’m guessing they were shot with one of those Canon 5D Mark II cameras, which seem to generate extremely gorgeous pictures in low light.
“Our Chief Meteorologist Topper Shutt has been declared the most accurate in DC for six years running and we wanted to find an authentic, genuine, entertaining way to tell that story,” said Sandra Gehring, WUSA’s marketing director.
“Something that had the power to actually cut through all of the sameness of weather promotion in the market. I think these are some of the most memorable weather promotions the market has seen in quite awhile!”
I don’t know what kind of weather promos the market has been seeing, but I can only imagine.
I like these, even though they draw heavily from the Lincoln car ads featuring Matthew McConhaughey. But I think anytime you shoot someone inside a car at night, even if it’s the station’s Storm Tracker, it will draw comparisons to those McConaughey ads.
By the way, those ads were hugely successful for Lincoln. Sales went up as high as 25% initially.
Gehring’s right, I bet these do stand out. And if ratings go up anywhere near 25%, she’ll be OK with the comparisons.
