WDIV’s initiative is part of Graham Media Group’s multi-station commitment to “addressing the opioid crisis in our communities.”
WDIV has partnered with Families Against Narcotics, CARE of Southeastern Michigan, Region 10 and The Macomb County Office of Substance Abuse to help develop stories and be a resource to viewers and those in need.
On Sept. 6, WDIV held an all-day event that featured phone banks, investigative news reports, digital content and a locally produced hour-long program.
“Opioid Nation: An American Epidemic is a way for us to take our dedication to reporting the hard truths about addiction to the next level and work with community partners to combat addiction,” said Marla Drutz, WDIV’s general manager.
According to the station, there have been more than 80,000 page views for its opioid coverage.
More than 160 people have answered an opioid user survey, helping the station compile data on causes of opioid addictions and obstacles to recovery.
WDIV’s Opioid Nation Facebook page has a combined reach of 900,000.
“This type of outreach into communities grappling with this crisis will undoubtedly spur conversation and action and, make no mistake about it, will save lives,” said Emily Barr, Graham Media’s president.
