Here are some examples of what the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation has donated to various nonprofits in Nexstar markets since August.
The Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation is contributing and working with public charities and nonprofit organizations to improve the communities in which Nexstar Media and its subsidiaries do business. Its goal is to make donations of approximately of $350,000 annually.
Here are some examples of what the Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation has donated to various nonprofits in Nexstar markets since August.
In Dayton, Ohio, The Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation donated $20,000 to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) on behalf of WDTN, Nexstar’s NBC affiliate, and WBDT, the CW affiliate Nexstar operates under a shared services agreement.
These funds will be directed to their Keeping More Families Close capital campaign which will allow the Dayton Ronald McDonald House to serve more families and provide families with better amenities such as an expanded kitchen, enhanced play and recreational areas, and dedicated work and wellness space.
“WDTN-TV and WBDT-TV demonstrate time and again how much they care for families in our area,” says Rita Cyr, the CEO of RMHC Dayton. “Parents need the emotional and physical comfort and support that the Ronald McDonald House provides, and this generous gift will go a long way in providing some normalcy during a very stressful time.”

In Norfolk, Va., The Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation donated $5,000 to The H.O.P.E. Foundation Inc. on behalf of WAVY and WVBT, Nexstar’s NBC and Fox affiliates, respectively. The H.O.P.E. Foundation, which draws its name from its motto, Helping Others Pursue Excellence, is dedicated to providing overnight shelter and homecooked meals for the region’s homeless population during the months of May to November.
In addition to providing shelter and meals to the homeless, The H.O.P.E. Foundation provides a variety of other services to the area’s homeless, including health screening, assistance with obtaining state-issued identification cards, birth certificates, high school equivalency certificates, helps individuals register to vote and felons to get their civil rights restored.
“We are so thankful to WAVY-TV/WVBT for their partnership and for this generous donation,” says Regina Darden, founder of The H.O.P.E. Foundation. “The foundation will put this donation to good use by assisting the guests/homeless in our community who need our love, support, consistency, and respect for how hard they work to overcome their personal challenges. As I always say, ‘Homelessness is a situation, it’s not who you are.’”
“Our hope is that this donation will draw more attention to the needs of the local homeless population here in Virginia,” says Carol Ward, WAVY GM.
In Nashville, on behalf of WKRN, Nexstar’s ABC affiliate, the Nexstar Foundation donated $3,000 each to two local charitable organizations: Hands on Nashville and The Community Resource Center. Both organizations work together to assist those in need of help.
“I am thrilled to be able to make these donations to Hands on Nashville and the Community Resource Center,” says Tracey Rogers, WKRN’s GM. “The team at News 2 knows first-hand about the work done by these organizations when needs arise in our community.”
The Community Resource Center works to empower its partner agencies to maintain their focus on providing critical services to Middle Tennessee’s most vulnerable populations by relieving them of the burden of securing essential products.
In Lansing, Mich., on behalf of WLNS, Nexstar’s CBS affiliate, the Nexstar Foundation donated $5,000 to the Izzo Legacy Foundation. Created and developed by the family of legendary Michigan State University college basketball coach Tom Izzo, including his wife, Lupe, and their daughter Raquel, The Izzo Legacy Foundation’s mission is to bring people together in the community for the common purpose of helping others.
“It is community leaders like WLNS-TV that help the Izzo Legacy meet our goal of bringing people in our community together through charitable endeavors for the common purpose of helping others,” says Lupe Izzo, one of the organization’s founders.
“The Izzo Legacy helps support a vast array of local non-profits that provide critical services to members of our community in need,” says Marci Daniels, WLNS GM. Not only will this be a fun event for all levels of ability, but it will raise funds that will make a positive impact where it is needed most locally.”
In Sioux Falls, S.D., the Nexstar Foundation donated $5,000 to Call to Freedom on behalf of KELO, Nexstar’s CBS-MNT affiliate. Call to Freedom provides supportive services for victims of human trafficking and sexual exploitation by creating a strong network of front-line providers who offer safe housing, mental health counseling, medical assistance, chemical dependency assistance, and transportation.
“We are extremely pleased to support the mission of Call to Freedom, as Becky and her team make a difference in the lives of women, giving them hope and freedom, and now a new place to find help,” says Mari Ossenfort, KELO’s GM.
“These dollars will go toward our new building expansion,” says Becky Rasmussen, executive director of Call to Freedom. “The home will meet the needs of human trafficking survivors in our area who wish to receive the support of CTF during their recovery, but are also focused on healthy families.”
In Lubbock, Texas, the Nexstar Foundation donated $5,000 to the Covenant Health Foundation of Lubbock on behalf of KLBK, Nexstar’s CBS affiliate and KAMC, the CBS affiliate operated by Nexstar under a shared services agreement.
Covenant Health Foundation inspires giving, develops strategic partnerships, and engages the community to support the overall mission and vision of Covenant Health System, which takes pride in serving the entire community, especially those who are poor and vulnerable.
“The Covenant Health System and the Covenant Foundation have played an important role in providing outstanding care to the residents of Lubbock and the surrounding region for decades, and we are very pleased to support their efforts,” says Cindy Gilstrap, KLBK’s GM.
In Joplin, Mo., the Nexstar Foundation donated $10,000 to The Boys & Girls Clubs of Ottawa County, Oklahoma on behalf of KSNF, Nexstar’s NBC affiliate which services parts of Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas. The Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa County seeks to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. KSNF has a long-established relationship with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Ottawa County, serving as one of the organization’s media partners, sponsoring some of the organization’s fundraisers and providing them with news coverage when appropriate.
“The Boys & Girls Clubs of Ottawa County are extremely important to the continued well-being and growth of youngsters in need of friendship, support, and mentoring,” says John Hoffman, KSNF GM. “The organization does a wonderful job providing these kinds of opportunities in the community.”
In Charleston, W.Va., the Nexstar Foundation and WOWK, Nexstar’s CBS affiliate, donated $5,000 to Mountain Mission, serving needy families and individuals in the Kanawha Valley. In operation for more than 90 years, Mountain Mission was founded in 1925 by a few men to help meet the spiritual and physical needs of the less fortunate with emergency assistance, financial support, food, clothing, furniture and medication.
WOWK has been associated with Mountain Mission for many years, and serves as the organization’s primary media partner.
“We are proud of our long association with Mountain Mission, and grateful for everything it provides for those who are in need of help throughout the Kanawha Valley,” says Sean Banks, WOWK GM. “The staff is wonderful, and their work is critically important.”
