WBRZ, the ABC affiliate in Baton Rouge, La., owned by the Manship family, announced that Rocky Daboval, the station’s general manager, is retiring in January.
He was WBRZ’s general manager for 18 years. Daboval, a native of New Orleans, joined WBRZ in 1979 as an account executive. Daboval was the station’s director of sales for 16 years prior to becoming GM in February 2005.
The station says Trey Schmaltz will take over as general manager. Schmaltz has been with WBRZ for the past 12 years, serving as director of news for the past year-and-a-half.
“I cannot imagine a better television station,” Daboval says. “Frankly, there is not one. There is not a station [owner] that cares as much about our community and what we are doing than the Manship family.”
WBRZ is one of a few remaining locally owned television stations in the country.
“Change is an exciting opportunity for all of us,” says Richard Manship, WBRZ’s president.
“Rocky has led us through important moments – both at WBRZ and in our community. We’ve been lucky to have Rocky guide our industry and he’s lucky to be able to now be able to spend more time with his family.”
