KETK, Nexstar’s NBC affiliate serving Tyler/Longview, Texas, and KLRT, Mission’s Fox affiliate in Little Rock, each earned a 2021 Sigma Delta Chi Award from the National Society of Professional Journalists.
The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry through the daily work of its roughly 6,000 members; works to inspire and educate current and future journalists through professional development; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press through its advocacy efforts.
KETK was honored with the Public Service in Television Journalism Award for Small Markets, size 51 and up, for its special report, “Growing Pains: A Parent’s Guide to Mental Health.”
The multiplatform, five-part series focused on the struggles parents face when dealing with an adolescent’s mental health issues.
The series also provided resources available in East Texas to support families navigating the impact of mental health on their daily lives.
The judges commented, “This is a great example of taking a national statistic and localizing it to the benefit of the community it impacts. Expanding the coverage with solution-oriented accessible follow-up resources as the coverage progressed is the sign of the public service component that is so useful for the community journalist’s service.”
KLRT FOX 16 won the Television Feature Reporting Award (Small-Market Station: 51+ market) for its special report, “Brotherly Competition.”
The special report by Kevin Kelly highlighted the friendly competition between Kelly and his brother, which ended up saving his brother’s life.
