WXLV, Sinclair’s ABC affiliate in Winston-Salem, N.C., partnered with the United Way of Greater High Point and the Greater High Point Food Alliance for a food drive Nov. 27-Dec. 1.
“We are so excited about our partnership with the GHPFA,” says Allison Aldridge, WXLV’s GM. “We plan to do everything we can to help decrease food insecurity.”
The Greensboro/High Point area ranks 14th in the nation for food hardship, with a rate of 19.2%. Food hardship is defined as someone not being able to afford required food for themselves or their family within the past year.
Guilford County is tragically home to 24 distinct food deserts, with seven of them being in High Point. A food desert is classified as an area that is greater than one walkable mile away from a grocery store.
“Food pantries are seeing an unprecedented demand for food while at the same time the availability of food is diminishing,” says Rev. Carl W. Vierling, Executive Director of the Greater High Point Food Alliance. “The ABC45, United Way of Greater High Point, and the Greater High Point Food Alliance food drive came at a critical time and will provide over 1000 pounds of food to a local food pantry.”
