KSHB, the Scripps-owned NBC affiliate in Kansas City, Mo., started Gift of Sole, a new community project that, on the surface, raises money to buy new shoes for those individuals who may not otherwise be able to afford them. But when you look a little deeper, you’ll see how the project benefits those kids’ self-esteem.

“For the young people who will benefit from this effort, it’s more than just a pair of shoes,” says Kathleen Choal, KSHB’s GM. “This gift will help boost their confidence and self-esteem, which can lead to improved behavior and better results in school. It truly is a win-win for everyone.”
In its inaugural year, KSHB’s Gift of Sole raised $46,735 to help buy shoes for local kids. In less than one week in October, enough money was raised to purchase more than 850 pairs of sought after, good-quality shoes for children who may not otherwise be able to afford them.

“The generosity and willingness from our audience to stand behind this project truly means a lot,” Holmes said. “The money raised will help so many more kids than I could have ever imagined. I’m very blessed and tremendously grateful to the station and the people of Kansas City for rallying behind this effort.”
Gift of Sole was a partnership between KSHB; Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Kansas City; the Urban Ranger Corps; and the Scripps Howard Foundation. The shoes will be distributed to local kids in the coming weeks.
NOTE: KSHB and Kevin Holmes really took this project up a notch with its dedicated page on the station’s website. There you’ll find more creative stories like a school superintendent’s perspective on shoes and what adults have to say about how shoes increase self-esteem.
