WTVG, Gray’s ABC affiliate in Toledo, Ohio, earned The OTT MVP Award or OTTY Award for March.
The OTTY Award is given each month to the Gray Television OTT desk that goes above and beyond.
Gray’s CBS affiliate WVLT in Knoxville, Tenn., earned the station February’s OTTY Award.
WTVG (13abc) launched its OTT desk a few months ago and really ramped up its efforts in January. Since then, Josh Croup, the OTT anchor, has been leading the charge.
The digital desk covers a wide variety of topics, from fun events to breaking news, statewide briefings, interviews with experts, weather, and most recently, a 30-minute wrapup of the week’s top stories.
Croup handles the technology of the OTT desk using all of the features to his advantage.
“This is how we are going to consume the news and we need to be ahead of it,” Croup says. “If we’re not going to be in front of this, we’re going to get left behind.”
Croup sees streaming as the way his generation consumes news.
“We are very selective,” he says. “If we see a topic, we pick the topics that we want to watch, and so we give viewers that selective option whenever it comes to digital,” he said.
