Hundreds of seniors in the community are facing a long hot and dangerous summer with no relief from the heat. In Pensacola, Fla., the summers can be long, hot, and oppressive. This month consisted of a string of days of record and near-record high temperatures in Northwest Florida.
Hundreds of seniors in the community are facing a long hot and dangerous summer with no relief from the heat.
WEAR, Sinclair’s ABC there, in partnership with the Council on Aging, held a day-long campaign on June 24 to collect donations for fans and A/C units for local seniors.
WEAR’s Senior Chill Out, in its 12th year, collected 472 fans, 467 A/C units and more than $96,000 in cash donations.

The two stories I feature here were reported by Sue Straughn, who has been at WEAR since 1973. Straughn started as a clerk typist and is now a senior news anchor. She’s described as “the life of the community” on the station’s website. These stories make it clear why there is such a need for help in the senior community to beat the heat. Very well done. I spoke to Straughn who credited the community for stepping up whenever the need is there.
Local TV stations across the country take an active role in helping their communities all year long with events just like this. There is not enough time or ink for this reporter to get to them all, deserving as they are.
