Nearly one in four Jackson, Miss., metro families live at or below the poverty line, according to the 2020 U.S. census. So WAPT, Hearst’s ABC affiliate there, held a one-day WAPT School Tools donation drive at Walmart locations in three counties that collected nearly 4,000 school supplies during this year’s 4th annual 16 WAPT School Tools supply drive.
All supplies and donations go to the United Way of the Capital Area for distribution to local families in need.
In the four years of School Tools, 16 WAPT has collected more than 10,000 school supplies and over $29,000 in monetary donations for the United Way of the Capital Area.
“Our community never disappoints when it comes to helping neighbors in need,” says Peter Keith, WAPT’s general manager. “Rising prices have impacted all of us this year, particularly as families head back to school. Generosity and giving are needed more than ever, and we encourage everyone to continue to give whenever they can.”
