KMBC, Hearst’s ABC affiliate in Kansas City, collected more than 500,000 diapers during March as a result of KMBC’s community outreach project, KMBC 9 Cares for Kid and HappyBottoms, Kansas City’s only diaper bank.
HappyBottoms is one of KMBC 9 Cares for Kids’ five community partners — all focusing on creating a brighter future for children across Kansas and Missouri. The diapers raised will be distributed to Kansas City metropolitan area charities and families.
Throughout 2023, KMBC will focus on raising money for five nonprofit partner organizations — helping them to provide long-term, sustainable solutions to the problems facing children across the Kansas City area. The partner organizations are Giving the Basics, HappyBottoms, KVC Health Systems, Lead to Read KC and Operation Breakthrough.
“Diapers are a basic necessity and without donations low-income families would be without the means to care for their children,” says Justin Antoniotti, KMBC’s GM. “HappyBottoms is there for families in need and we are proud to support them.”
“Being a KMBC 9 Cares for Kids partner has been an enormous blessing to our organization,” says Ashley Allison, marketing and communications manager for HappyBottoms. “We have seen a substantial increase in need for all necessities, especially diapers. KMBC 9 has given us a platform to raise awareness about diaper need and has given the community a clear way to help. Thanks to their efforts, this has been our most successful diaper drive ever.”
In January, KMBC launched a new community outreach initiative for 2023: KMBC 9 Cares for Kids. The program’s mission is to connect the station’s viewers with local nonprofits providing resources, support and opportunities to help children reach their full potential and achieve success.
This year, KMBC celebrates its 70th year of service to viewers in Kansas and Missouri. The station’s goal is to help create a brighter future for this generation of Kansas City youth.
“Our hope is that the money raised allows our partner organizations to expand services and help more children,” Antoniotti says.
