This year, Pittsburgh declared homelessness a public health emergency. “This Chronicle episode will focus on the issue of homelessness in Pittsburgh and what our city is doing to improve the situation,” says says Charles W. Wolfertz III, WTAE’s GM.
Pittsburgh has hundreds of men, women and children without a roof over their heads or a place to call home. And just like the Steel City’s 90 neighborhoods, the numerous homeless encampments each have their own name.
“Addiction, incarceration, rising inflation and the COVID-19 pandemic have plagued Pittsburgh’s homeless population,” says Charles W. Wolfertz III, GM of Hearst’s ABC affiliate WTAE. “This Chronicle episode will focus on the issue of homelessness in Pittsburgh and what our city is doing to improve the situation.”
This year, Pittsburgh officials declared homelessness a public health emergency. There is work underway to limit the number of tents and sleeping bags lining the three rivers.
While encampments are being shut down and shelters are closing, a new multi-million-dollar facility recently opened, bringing both hope and frustration with it.
“Sadly, homelessness is a crisis with many causes and no easy solutions,” says Jim Parsons, WTAE news director. “Our talented team of journalists will show the results of their investigations into Pittsburgh’s homelessness dilemma, for which reporter Sheldon Ingram traveled over 1,000 miles to see how another city is tackling the issue.”
In the next edition of Chronicle, hosts Mike Clark and Kristen Powers will share the journey of people currently experiencing homelessness. They will also shine a light on Pittsburghers who have successfully rebuilt their lives.
The primetime special, Chronicle: Homeless in Pittsburgh, premieres on WTAE on Tuesday, June 20, at 8 p.m.
